Cross Trust Chess Competition

On Thursday 7th December, the Saxmundham Chess Team travelled over to Ixworth Free School to compete against Beccles and Ixworth in the latest Cross Trust Competition, “Lightning Chess”.
The “Lightning Chess” tournament saw match-ups in each year group from Y7-10, with each game lasting a maximum of eight minutes. The winning player being decided by either beating their opponent with a “checkmate” or by having the greater amount of points at the end of the allotted time. Points were awarded depending on how many opposition pieces were captured, with the valuable Queen receiving the most points for a player.

All the points were added up at the end, and the winning school in each year group were as follows:
Year 7 – Beccles
Year 8 – Saxmundham
Year 9 – Saxmundham
Year 10 – Saxmundham

All four year groups had some incredibly close battles and even though we won 3 out of the 4 year group categories, there were only 30 points between all three schools overall!

Huge congratulations to the Saxmundham team who were the overall winners this year and well done to everyone who took part from all the schools, you really did your schools proud, throughout a keenly fought contest.
Finally, a big thank you to the Ixworth staff for hosting the event and we are now looking forward to the next Cross Trust Competition, “The Winter Games” to be hosted by Beccles in the new year, ready to compete with you all again!
