Celebrating Success at Saxmundham Free School

On Friday 6 October the annual Saxmundham Free School Celebration Evening took place, which looks back at the achievements of the most recent Y11 group to leave the school and also those students in the lower school who have achieved something exceptional during the year.

This year, we were delighted to welcome David Kogan to be our special guest speaker and to hand out the awards. David Kogan is the CEO of Magnum Photos and he talked about his incredible career path that incorporated journalism, war zones, helping to launch GMTV, becoming Managing Director of Reuters and negotiating the biggest TV rights deal in Premier League history.

The current Head Boy and Head Girl spoke confidently during the event and awards were given out to Year 11 students who had made outstanding individual achievements during their time at the school. The winner of the Seckford Foundation Cup, which is awarded for outstanding academic performance, was won by Mark Spicer who gained a grade 8 in English and maths, which is equivalent to an A* grade, as well as achieving two A*’s, three A’s, a grade 7 (A) and two B’s at GCSE. Mark, who has attended Saxmundham Free School since Year 7, is looking forward to studying at One sixth-form college in Ipswich next month where he’ll work towards A Level qualifications in accountancy, maths, economics and ancient history.

The “Watson Cup” which celebrates Outstanding progress during their school journey went to Lewis Pinon.

David Lees, Headteacher at Saxmundham Free School, said: “Thank you to everyone who attended our Celebration Evening. It was fantastic to reflect on our amazing GCSE results with the students and also to celebrate their individual successes. It was also wonderful to celebrate the amazing journey of our school. GCSE results were up 28% this year and student progress is one of the highest in the County. I am really proud of the achievements of all of our students this year and would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication during their time at the school. I wish you all every success in your next steps in education.”
